5 WARNING Signs of a Whiplash Injury

Been in a recent car accident and think you might have whiplash?

Here are 5 important symptoms of a whiplash injury you’ll want to immediately get checked out by a chiropractor.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash happens when your head is quickly jolted forward (hyperflexion) or backward (hyperextension). Consider the crack a leather whip makes when it is moved in a similar motion. Since your head can weigh over 10 pounds any sudden jolt can put tremendous forces on your neck, causing:

  • Muscles and tendon strain or tears
  • Torn or sprained ligaments
  • Damaged nerves
  • Concussions
  • Fractured vertebrae (in more extreme cases)

When to seek whiplash care:

It is especially important to seek care if you notice any of the following symptoms after a potential whiplash incident.

  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Pain radiating down your arm
  • Energy or mood disturbances
  • New, unexplained aches or weaknesses

After any potential whiplash incident, it’s a good idea to do three things:

  • Get evaluated by a chiropractor or a health care provider
  • Monitor for changing symptoms and discuss new ones with your chiropractor as soon as possible
  • Stick to your recommended treatment plan to help limit long-term impacts an future flare-ups
